There were a lot of "just waits" from people but I don't know where those comments came from so....whatever. I had been doing smaller trips already such as PR, Miami, DR which are a pretty safe bet with a toddler. However, one day I woke up and decided I needed some new adventures and booked a 2 week trip with G. When I booked I pictured her running around in parks while I sipped on wine but found out I was pregnant about 6 weeks before the trip so I mostly spent spiraling. The trip was almost cancelled since the same day we were flying out I needed to see the OB urgently and wait to be cleared! I love planning trips and my philosophy is always since I already made it there, why stick to just one location. The pictures are cute but behind the scenes was chaos that just needed readjusting. I was more scared of the flight but G was actually a good flyer. I did take extra snacks especially since I was also pregnant and starving every 2 seconds. After some research I decided on roundtrip Boston to Lisbon but flying from Lisbon straight to London and ending in Lisbon. I am sharing my route, costs and any tips along the way so feel free to steal my itinerary! Flights: Boston to London via Lisbon roundtrip ($410 total TAP Airlines) Great price, I am always checking google flights and secretflying.com. We flew out on the red eye September 23rd so G can sleep on flight then back home on October 5th. On the way out we got delayed and missed our original connecting flight to London! First stop London: September 24th 3 nights at the Grand at Trafalgar Square for 925 pounds. Location was great but would not recommend, we ordered a crib for G and luckily my husband checked it before putting her in and there were huge screws in it. Hard to miss so not sure how they did! Always check the cribs, no matter the hotel! We took the Tube from the airport to the hotel with a stroller and all our bags. We packed light so it was not too bad and doable. Mostly walked everywhere, lots of rain, browsed markets and stopped at random restaurants. We hit all the major sites but wanted to keep it mostly unplanned to make sure we could adjust when needed with a toddler. Second stop Florence: Flight through Vueling September 27th, 240 EUR total (100 per adult and 40 infant charge) two nights at Hotel Alessandra was $362 total. This was our second time in Florence and mostly wanted to enjoy the wine (womp womp) and food. We walked around and explored. Made the mistake of shopping at The Mall outlet and definitely spent more than we wanted but the good deals were worth it. Now we had our first delay in Lisbon where we just adjusted best we can to deal with an additional 4 hours at an airport we did not account for trying to get G to nap anywhere in there. But an air travel strike started while in Florence so our original flight of Florence to Paris was cancelled and I had to come up with a new plan. I think since this was not our first time in Italy, I was not too worried. I booked a train from Florence to Rome then a $195 flight from Rome to Paris, not the plan but over here we adjust instead of complain! Day trip to Rome! We hung out around the Colosseum, had pizza and ran around with G. We kept our bags at the train station for storage and when it was time to head to airport we had the BEST UBER DRIVER. I stayed in the car with G while Aquiles went in. In Italian, the driver told me he and his wife can't wait for grandchildren but his daughter refuses to settle down (only in her 20s). G was acting like a toddler who had missed a nap and this man took his phone and started showing her pictures and introducing her to Peppa Pig. I hope he is living his dream of being a grandfather now, I am sure he is the best. Arriving at Paris was total CHAOS. Because of the strike we had a limited time to leave the airport before air traffic controller shut down. The only flight I could get from Rome was to Orly which was further so I hired a driver to wait for us at the airport. We were delayed (of course) so had to wait for approval to leave, once we were in the air the controllers basically said just kidding we aren't waiting and we had to get re-routed! Perfect since we were now landing in CDG closer to center but awful because my hired driver was at the wrong airport so goodbye EUR100\. We had to wait an hour just to get a cab or Uber out of CDG since so many flights were re-routed. There is a priority lane for cabs for those who are pregnant or traveling with children but everyone was too on edge to care and I was not going to try my luck. Looking back I do wish I had been more firm because tired parents, exhausted toddler and first trimester sickness are not a good mix. Third (or fourth because of Rome) stop Paris. We spent 4 nights at Hotel Saint Michel for a total of $1,421\. As you can already tell we did the usual walk everywhere and see all the major attractions. We also went inside the Louvre, where G had a blowout as soon as we walked in and I had to wash her clothes in the sink. She spent the rest of the day without pants but at least I put a blanket on her. We did shopping, hit up parks and had picnics. One thing worth mentioning which was strange since it happened more than once was that as soon as a restaurant saw the stroller they would mention they were closed, and it was clearly not the case. Last stop: Lisbon! We stayed 2 nights at Hotel Santa Justa for $647 total and it was the perfect location and room size. Lots of walking and ice cream. Since there are so many hills we did a tuk tuk tour. It was great to hit up many sites but too bouncy for pregnancy. Our driver ended up going super slow but I would avoid it if pregnant. We were also pleasantly surprised with the aquarium, so worth the visit with a toddler. Finally October 5th - Flight home! Some things I would tell you before you book: \-Take a stroller \-Always check hotel cribs, take your own sheets if possible \-Don't try and pack enough diapers for full trip, there are stores and pharmacies there \-Build in buffer both in terms of time and money, especially when traveling through multiple cities. I tend to book my flights and hotel ahead of time so when it is time to go on the trip that part of the budget is paid for and we are just budgeting for food and extras, which I don't track. Don't need that kind of reality check on vacation, ha! I will leave the summarized totals below in case you want to plan and need a starting budget. This was not a relaxing trip, which I didn't expect it to be considering my plan was to get a million steps in and city hop. But the memories of ending each long day with having the most delicious ice cream with a new view live forever in my mind. Re-visiting places but seeing them anew through the eyes of my little bestie? OOOf! People always say traveling with kids isn't a vacation but I think it is. Yes, I am still parenting, feeding, soothing and keeping a schedule in a new city. But I am also not working, not cooking and not resetting my house every night. If you are planning something similar, believe me when I say it will probably go smoother than you think. If you are anything like me, you tend to already think of the worst scenario that probably won't happen anyways. If it does, which it won't, at least you thought about it and will be prepared!
